The details that help most

1. The address. An in-town lot in Midtown, a hillside property near Hamilton and a sandy yard in Phenix City come with different soil, slopes and local offices, and the address alone hints at what the visit will find.
2. The project and its rough size. A new or wider driveway, a back patio, a front walk or steps, a pad for a shed or camper, or a replacement for concrete that has cracked or sunk. Approximate length and width are enough.
3. What the concrete will carry. Cars only, or a heavy pickup, a boat trailer, a camper, a hot tub or shop equipment. More weight calls for a deeper stone bed, a thicker slab and more steel.
4. What is there today. Lawn, gravel, old concrete, pavers or asphalt. Demolition and hauling of existing material get added to the job.

Photos worth sending

One photo should take in the whole work area from a distance, showing how the ground falls away from the house. Others can zoom in on cracks, dropped panels or crumbling edges. The most revealing picture of all is taken in the rain: it shows where runoff travels and where it sits. In this climate, water decides nearly as much about a slab's life as the concrete itself.

What comes next

The contractor arranges a visit. Standing on the property answers questions no photo can, such as how firm the ground is, how the lot drains and whether a concrete truck can get to the spot, and that is the point where a real scope and cost can be worked out. Ask for the scope in writing, covering base preparation, thickness, reinforcement, joint layout and finish, so that any two estimates can be compared item by item.
